The national currency is the Rupee (Rs) and its denomination, the paise (p). The currency started to circulate around 1540 thanks to Emperor Ser Shah Suri only in the north of India and it circulates throughout the country. The denominations of the currency are:

Paise:  5  10  20  25  50
Rupees:  1  2  5

Rupees:  10  20  25  50  100  500  1000

Coins in India are not frequently used; it is much more common to get bills as change. Ripped bills are a problem in India, do not take them as change, and keep in mind most places will not take them from you. Go to the Reserve Bank of India to change them.

Always carry some change with you, whenever you pay with a large bill for some reason they will never have change.
