Companies in Italy control a great part of industrial output. There are three state-holding companies that have played an important role in Italian economy: ENI (National Hydrocarbon Agency), IRI (Industrial Reconstruction Institute) and EFIM (Agency for Participation and Financing of Manufacturing Industry), many of these companies were dissolved, dismantled or sold. On the other hand, the major private companies are the Fiat automobile, Olivetti, Montedison chemical firm and Pirelli Rubber Company; although one of Italy's strengths is the thriving state of its small firms.
