The health care system in Italy has a low to average reputation amongst Italians but, still, the reality is that Italy is a country where you can expect to find low-cost health care and a good standard of medical assistance.

In Italy, all citizens, residents and foreigners, that meet certain requirements have the right to general medical assistance provided by a general practitioner, and for children, a pediatrician.

Any person arriving in Italy with form E111 has the right to urgent medical treatment. They have to present the form to the relevant local health authority (Azienda Sanitaria Locale) and they can receive medical treatment equivalent to that available for an Italian citizen.

In State Hospitals, the standard is variable and the levels of comfort are likely to be well below what Europeans expect. Doctors in Italy are both dedicated and well–trained. If you prefer to go private, then you will find Italian private hospitals that are the equal of any other country.

Private Health Insurance

Hospitals & Private Clinics
All cities and large towns in Italy have at least one clinic or hospital, indicated by the international sign of a white ‘H’ on a blue background. If you need to be hospitalized, you will need to produce your doctor's referral...

Emergency Numbers

Italy has a double approach of handling emergency calls: it has both particular telephone numbers for medical, fire, police, car problems and other emergency services, and an "integrated" emergency number.

The Carabinieri and the Police in Italy have similar duties but the Carabinieri are more military by history. The Carabinieri have wide jurisdiction and in particular operate in country areas with bases in villages throughout Italy and on the roads and highways.

If something goes seriously wrong, the standard emergency numbers are:

Emergency Police Help Number (also ambulance and fire)
Fire Department

Car problems

Guardia di Finanza
Medical Emergencies
