Direct dial service is the service feature that allows a user call any other user inside or outside the local area to place credit card calls, collect calls, and special billing calls into the public telephone network without operator assistance. This service requires more digits in the number dialed than are required for calling inside the local area. It also extends outside the limits of national public telephone network, in which case it is called International Direct Dial.

Can all phones dial out of the Japanese country?

No!! Believe it or not! Not all Japanese country lines can dial to international numbers. If you have a rented phone contract then you sometimes can't dial international. What you should do instead is to use one of the numerous call back services. You dial the access number then your id number and then the number out of the country.

What is a Call Back?

"Call Back" is a great way to save money using a system which avoids having to pay Japanese phone companies. It's a little bit of a bother, but most companies claim you can save up to 80% on international phone calls. If you frequently call home you should definitely be using this service. There are a lot of call back companies who will help you to use this useful service.

Direct dial service in Japan

From Japan:

You can get through direct to over 230 countries and service areas worldwide. Calls may be made from any location in Japan. Example: Imagine that you are calling New York (Area Code: 212), U.S.A. (Country Code: 1) and Telephone Number (123-4567)

• If your phone has been registered with MYLINE or MYLINE PLUS with KDDI Company or any another company that provides international communications services, dial:

Notes:
* Omit first "0" if there is one in the Area Code on the foreign side. (Some countries require 0 to be dialed.)
* International facsimile documents can be sent out by dialing in this way.
* Each company has its own international access number. These are as follows:

To Japan:

Direct dial international calls is possible from all the cellular equipment. This makes calling home simple and cheap. The country code for Japan is 81.
