Want to talk to friends over the phone inexpensively?

Internet phone calls sound like a good option. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is an IP telephony term that technology proposes for making voice calls through of a broadband Internet connection instead of an ordinary phone line.

How does VoIP work?
When we make a phone call by IP, our voice is converted into a digital signal, it is compressed and it is sent in small fragments (packages) of data IP. These packages are sent through Internet to the person with whom we are speaking. When they reach their destiny, they are assembled again, decompressed and turned into the signal of original voice.

Ways of connecting to a VoIP network
VoIP allows you make a call directly from:

  • A computer - some VoIP services only operate over the computer. If you use your own computer, you will require some software, microphone and speakers.
  • A special VoIP phone - other services only operate over a special VoIP phone. Special VoIP phones plug directly into your broadband connection and work largely like an ordinary telephone.
  • An ordinary phone connected to a special adapter - other services allow you to use an ordinary phone connected to a VoIP adapter. If you use a telephone with a VoIP adapter, you'll be able to dial just as you always have, and the service provider may also provide a dial tone.
What do you require to use VoIP in a computer?

  1. First, you require a Service Provider. The most commonly used at this moment is Skype.
  2. Second, you require at least a 512k Broadband (ADSL) connection.
  3. Third, you require a PC in which Skype can be run (See the minimum PC Specifications here)
  4. Fourth, you require some type of audio hardware to talk and listen through.

What is Skype?

Skype Skype is a visible program on internet that allows you make free voice calls from one Skype user to another. Talk for as long as you like without worrying about the cost or the distance. And even though the calls are free, they have a really excellent and superior quality. If you and your friends, family or business contacts are using webcams, you can also make free video calls.

You can also use Skype to receive calls from landline and mobile phones. It is cheap and easy way for your family, friends and colleagues to call you at a local rate, no matter where you are. More info: SkypeIn.

In addition, you can also use Skype to call regular phone numbers such as landline or mobile phones. To do that, you need to buy credit from Skype. Skype rates are very competitive compared to the cost of making the same call using an ordinary home phone. More info: SkypeOut.
